Hello, I'm John, founder of Lumivate. I am passionate about programming and helping others get started since I was self taught myself over 9 years ago.
Before programming, I was working various blue collared jobs, and studying part time on my own time in the evenings and weekends. I watched video courses and built my own projects to learn. One year later, I started applying for jobs. I quickly realized that they were looking for experience. As someone just getting started and no formal education, it was intimidating!! But I made a way by building out my own portfolio project. But shortly after, I was able to land my first job in software development. What a feeling that was!!
But it didn't stop there. I gained so much experience from that first job that I nearly doubled my salary just one year later. I kept going up, but eventually decided to take one more jump. About two years ago I became an independent contractor so I could have more freedom with my time.
I have been so blessed by this field, but I am no anomaly. I have helped friends learn programming and thrive in their new careers. I also worked as a tutor for a while, and saw how students learn.
Why Lumivate?
I've seen a lot of obstacles along the way. First of all, everyone wonders - what languages and technologies should I learn!? Who do you go to when you get stuck or have specific questions? Education that doesn't work with your busy schedule. Cost!! How to position yourself when applying for your first job?
Here at Lumivate, we've removed these obstacles. Personally, I believe that learning through a more independent route is far more efficient than getting a formal education.
And independent learning is even more efficient today with the rise of ChatGPT. Our personalized virtual tutor will help you along the way so you don't get stuck. We offer weekly meetups with different times to fit your schedule so you can network and ask questions to myself or one of our other trained coaches.
We will help you throughout your entire journey, from just getting started to landing your first job. It is very realistic to expect to land your first job within a year or less.
